Eliminate Chemical Toxins

A Guide to Getting EDCs Out of Your Body Products

Raising awareness is a key component of FACT’s mission; however, just as important is providing suggestions on how to make simple and permanent life changes to decrease EDC exposure.  The internet is full of helpful resources but we live busy lives and sometimes it is difficult to sit down and spend hours researching what items to buy and where to begin making important changes to decrease harmful chemical exposures for yourself and your family.  Our guides contain suggestions on where to start, FACT does not endorse any of the products mentioned nor receives any compensation from any particular companies, the products mentioned are what this author uses and happens to like.  We welcome input from others.

There is also a very long list of companies that offer phthalate and paraben free products, we encourage consumers to try different products and find what works for them and their family.  Phthalate and paraben free products may be more difficult to find in stores and may be more expensive.  We recommend looking online at www.amazon.com and www.jet.com along with the product websites and compare prices.

Ways to Eliminate Phthalate and Paraben Exposure:

Begin by mentally going through your daily routine and catalog all of the items you use on your body.  For example, my routine goes something like this:

Morning:

  • Shower: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, facial cleanser, shaving cream
  • Cosmetics
  • Deodorant
  • Tooth paste
  • Mouth wash
  • Lotion
  • Hair spray
  • Aveda Smooth Infusion hair styling cream
  • Shaving cream
  • Sunscreen
  • Hand soap

Evening:

  • Bubble bath, salts, oils
  • Skin care
  • Make up remover

Baby/Children:

  • Soap
  • Lotion
  • Bubble bath

Check the labels for products that you routinely use for phthalates and parabens and discard the ones that contain these harmful EDCs.

Chemical toxins are in almost every type of body products.

The following is a list of products/brands that my family uses and likes.

  • Alba: make up remover, face cleanser, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, sunscreen.  Alba products are also found in grocery stores, CVS, and Walgreens.
  • Jason: liquid body soap.  Some grocery stores, Whole Foods, Yes Organics.
  • Avalon Organics: shaving cream.  Some grocery stores.
  • Tom’s of Maine: bar soap, tooth paste, deodorant.  Some grocery stores, Whole Foods, Yes Organics.
  • Nature’s Gate: body lotion
  • Juice Beauty: foundation and face powder (I used this product while I was pregnant and no longer use foundation at all)
  • The Honest Company: hand soap (also carry infant items, personal care, and cleaning items).  Bed Bath and Beyond

Paraben and Phthalate Free Products

The market place is overwhelming, one of the reasons we started FACT was to help consumers identify safe, EDC free products.   If your goal is to eliminate harmful EDC exposure from your skin, the first step is to make a list of these items as discussed above and check their labels. Oftentimes cosmetics do not include an ingredient label, you can then go to the manufacturer’s website to see if the ingredients are listed.  Also utilize the Environmental Working Group’s product search, www.ewg.org, which has tested and rated the contents of thousands of produts.

Although phthalates and parabens are identified on labels, we understand that it is time consuming and burdensome to search for phthalate and paraben free products.  Therefore, the below is a list of resources and products that are phthalate and paraben free.
